INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I am originally trained as a scientist but have always loved teaching in various ways, from writing research papers to teaching Colloquial classes in college. Although I did not realize it at the time, I was growing as a natural teacher. I earned my degree in 1994 and have continuously found myself in positions of teacher, instructor, educator, coach, and tutor since then. After discovering the healing power of natural medicine, my focus has shifted toward anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, epigenetics, diabetes, and cancer. I feel very strongly about sharing what I have discovered so others can benefit. I have even written a book on why it is important to do annual cleanses and have developed an online program to support the healing experience.

The concentration of my teaching/tutoring/coaching experience over the years has been with adults wanting to change their lifestyle to improve health, heal cancer and diabetes, and take their health and fitness to the next level. I have had an amazing time developing education programs for doctors and wellness centers, sharing my knowledge with individuals, and witnessing how it helps people reach their goals!

More recently, I have also been tutoring K-12 students. I have tutored for children of friends and family and formally both online and in person. I have found that kids are so capable, especially once I find ways to peak their interest and draw them into the learning process. This is a challenge I find myself taking on with joy! I have a knack for breaking complex things down into very understandable parts, laymen’s terms.

I am a firm believer in UPN, unconditional positive regard, as a first approach with all children. First, they are human ‘beings’, then human ‘doings’. I also call on the little “kid” within myself and have fun during the tutoring process. I think about work from the child’s perspective and make decisions with them as long as the process is moving forward. If they get stuck, I make suggestions, but my goal is to build their confidence in solving problems. I treat them a little older than they are and drop myself down to a younger mindset. That has really been the only strategy I have ever had to use. It works every time, as long as I can discover what gets their attention.

Typically, I plan a well-structured day that leaves me feeling relaxed and accomplished by the evening. I enjoy daily workouts of qigong, cycling, or trail running, and meditations including chanting, drumming, and silence. I enjoy creating useful education presentations based on questions that come up from friends, family, and coaching clients. This gives me the opportunity to create in the various ways I enjoy creating. Other ways I love creating are with needle and thread beading, book writing, and aromatherapy. I believe in and enjoy a well-varied day to stimulate my mind and stay nibble both in body and mind.

I offer a variety of tutoring services for Peak Academics. I am excited to share my enthusiasm for science, as well as all elementary academics, upper level science, executive functioning skills, and remedial academic support.

Testimonial:

My 9-year-old son had a very hard year and fell out of love with school. We needed someone to give him skills to organize his work so he wasn’t overwhelmed with the volume and to make learning fun again. Andrea to the rescue! Andrea is kind, supportive, imaginative and focused. She finds creative ways to support him as he masters organizational skills for middle school and also keeps him completely engaged for his entire tutoring sessions. He has acquired countless skills, but above all has gained confidence that he can tackle any work set before him as long as he comes up with a plan and takes it one step at a time. Homework time was a multi-hour battle at our house with our son needing all the attention in a three-child home, but after only one semester of tutoring, the skills Andrea has taught my son make homework time in our family a peaceful and efficient process.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I am a homegrown Phoenix native and have watched it grow from a small city to a metropolis. I am an athlete and a ‘mathlete’. I attended ASU for my BAE in elementary education with an emphasis in computer education and math. I received my MAE from NAU in Educational Leadership, and last, I went back to ASU for a MAE in Computer-Based Education. Most recently, I have attended institutes at Cal-Berkeley’s College of Mathematics.

I have taught and/or coached for almost 30 years all around the Valley--everything from computer programming, keyboarding, computer applications, reading and math to swimming, softball, and volleyball--and all at the junior high level. I never turn down an opportunity to help someone increase their learning, whether it be reading, writing, math, or playing a sport. I have been informally tutoring students all my life, but have been professionally tutoring middle school math for the past few years.

I like to build on a student’s own knowledge about math and show them how having a growth mindset can greatly improve their understanding and performance in math. I acknowledge student’s frustration and anxiety about math and want to take what they know about it to create their own understanding, whether it is by using manipulatives, movement, videos, games, or presentations. The biggest takeaway I want students to gain is working towards understanding why math works--not just that it works.

Besides expanding my knowledge of math in my spare time, I am physically active--playing volleyball, SCUBA diving, skiing, and working out in my spare time. I like to hike and ride around the state with my husband, Jeff. I spend a lot of time in northern Arizona and volunteer with Flagstaff CERT program. I also work around the softball diamonds for the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Some places I have travelled to are Ireland, Estonia, Canada, and Mexico.

I love to help with math, but I can also tutor in middle school writing, general homework support, study strategies, self-advocacy, and organizational support.

Anna-Lisa is both reliable and flexible, willing to work around and accommodate intense sports schedules. Her approach is clear and my daughter received the help she needed to resolve questions and work through challenges related to mastering algebra.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I received my master’s degree in elementary education from National Louis University. I then started my career in education and taught grades five through eight in reading, writing, and social studies in the Chicago area. Although my husband and I loved Chicago, the warm temperatures and being close to family brought us to Arizona. I taught in a K-8 school in Phoenix for five years and then transitioned into the role of Instructional Coach at the same school. In addition, I have had the opportunity to teach an online class for Arizona State University for three years.

Most of my experience in the classroom has been working with middle school students in the areas of reading and writing. I have also tutored small groups of students in math. In my role as an instructional coach, I have had the opportunity to work with teachers from all grade levels and develop a well-rounded understanding of K-8 curriculum and interventions in reading for struggling students. I love helping students and teachers become lifelong learners!

To me, connecting with students is one of the most important aspects of teaching. That connection builds mutual respect and strong communication, and it will help the student strive to succeed. I connect with students by getting to know them, learning their interests, and incorporating what I have learned about them into instruction and lessons. I love to discuss books with my students and to find out what they think on a deeper level about what they have read. This leads to critical thinking skills that students need in all areas of life.

Outside of work, I love to be outdoors, whether it be going on walks with my daughter or enjoying dinner outside on a patio. Coming from the Midwest, I try to take advantage of the weather we have here whenever possible! I also enjoy reading and discovering new places to go with my family.

I offer tutoring services to elementary students in all subjects and middle school students in English Language Arts and executive functioning skills.

I have always enjoyed working with students and teaching people new things! I grew up in the Scottsdale area and volunteered in elementary schools as early as High School. In 2003, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Family Studies and Child Development from Arizona State University and began my career in education by teaching in a preschool.  After working in a preschool setting for three years, I decided I needed a new challenge, so I returned to school to complete a Master’s program at The University of Phoenix.  I earned an M.A.Ed. in K-12 Special Education in 2006 and began working in special education classrooms at a public school.

I have over 13 years of experience as an educator in preschool through 4th grade, working with children on the Autism spectrum, ADD and ADHD, as well as other learning disabilities. I currently work as a school administrator, after earning a second Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Arizona State University in May 2014. I also hold an Autism Specialist Certification (PBIS) from Northern Arizona University, a Wilson Reading Systems Level 1 and Dyslexia certification, and a reading endorsement.

I have worked with Peak academics since 2013 as both a tutor and an evaluator for our comprehensive educational evaluations.  I love working with students to support them with challenges they may have as well as to help determine what might help them to be more successful.  Each student is a unique individual and I enjoying finding ways to connect with them so that I can help support their learning.

When I am not working you will find me outdoors enjoying an active lifestyle.  I am a certified SCUBA diver, avid hiker, and ran my first half marathon in June.  I am currently training for a full marathon and a triathlon!

I am currently Peak’s primary evaluator for Comprehensive Educational Evaluations.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I grew up in the Bay Area in California. I moved onto college at Loyola University Chicago, where I completed my B.A. in History in 2011. I moved back to the Bay Area where my career in education began. I worked as a substitute teacher in Palo Alto while working my way through a credential/master’s program at the University of San Francisco, which I graduated from in 2014.

I taught high school social studies in Santa Clara, CA for three years before moving out to Phoenix, where I have been teaching high school since 2016.

I think it is extremely important to let students know that I am here to support and challenge them. I find connecting content to the students’ interest outside the academic world is an effective way to build a solid relationship with them. It allows students to be more engaged with their learning.

I am a massive basketball fan (Go Warriors). In addition, I am very into my barre3 workouts. I love taking road trips and exploring new places and cities.

I offer tutoring services in language arts, social studies, general homework support and executive functioning support.

There are plenty of options for tutors in the area. We have found the right fit with David and Peak Academics. Our son’s teachers have complimented him on the positive turnaround he has made and his grades are better than ever. Thank you David!

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York and moved to Arizona in 1997. I graduated from SUNY Cortland with a B.S. in Physical Education. I discovered yoga in 2009 and fell in love with the practice. In 2010, I completed my certification to teach yoga to kids ages 2-13. In 2016, I completed the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe and became certified to teach yoga to adults.

I have been teaching Physical Education to K-12 students at a private school for kids with learning differences since 2004. I have worked with students with ADD, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. I have taught yoga to these students since 2010, and mindfulness since 2016.

I am a firm believer in teaching the whole child, and have a passion for teaching students to be healthy in body and mind. I enjoy connecting with students through student-centered, casual conversations that allow them to share their experiences and interests.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy taking yoga classes and spending time outdoors, hiking, biking and walking. An interesting fact about me is that I adopted my daughter from China when she was four years old. She is 20 now and attends college in Tucson.

I am thrilled to offer services in mindfulness, meditation, body movement, and yoga to students of all ages.

Testimonial:

My 9 yr. old son has had the privilege of working with Jane for the past three years through yoga and mindfulness classes. She is an incredibly kind, patient and grounded practitioner. She creates a safe space for exploration of both yoga and mindfulness practices and is receptive to children's ideas and input. My son has achieved great emotional and physical self-regulation through his work with Jane. In his words, "Ms. Jane makes yoga fun! She's always calm and kind."

Jeremy M

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I have loved sports since I could walk. My dad used to get mad at me for shooting paper towels into trashcans in public restrooms, but I was always looking to play and compete. My love for sports turned into a love for math as I learned to read by pouring over box scores in the paper every morning. My parents used to buy me sports almanacs for birthday gifts, and I would read them for hours, just analyzing statistics and trends. I loved to play sports, but it was the analytics and strategy that appealed to me most.

In college, I earned a Bachelor's in Mathematics from the University of Oregon. After many years of coaching basketball at the middle and high school level, I decided that my calling was to share my love of math with young people. I later received my Master's in Teaching from Willamette University. I went on to teach at a public charter school in Central Oregon, where the focus was meeting the needs of every individual student academically, physically, and emotionally. We did everything within our power to make sure students’ needs were met so they could perform at their peak. This included being available to students for one-on-one tutoring during our prep periods, lunch, and before and after school. After being at this school for five years, my wife and I decided to make the move to Arizona for a change of scenery. I currently work at a private school in the area that focuses on college prep and developing executive function skills for students with learning challenges.

I have been working with young people through tutoring, coaching, and teaching since I graduated high school. I have met and connected with just about every kind of person through my unique experiences as a teacher and coach. I am a big fan of sports, movies, TV, music, and many other forms of popular culture. My interests, paired with my calm and welcoming demeanor, allow me to quickly connect with students. Teaching a subject like math that many despise, I find it helpful to incorporate students’ interests and make the content meaningful.

My wife and I have been married for almost a decade and we have a young daughter and two dogs. We share a love for many of the things I mentioned above, as well as home renovation. I struggle paying someone to do work that I can do myself, so over the past few years I have become very handy (with a lot of help from YouTube) and have developed a fondness for woodworking.

At Peak Academics I offer tutoring for all levels of mathematics, formal test preparation, and executive functioning skills.Testimonial:

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I grew up in a south suburb of Chicago where I had many opportunities to visit my mom’s school and watch her teach kindergartners. I always knew I wanted to work with kids so I began studying Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Illinois. During my time there, I worked in a Child Development Lab where I was exposed to the critical impact preschool teachers have on students at a young age.

All of these experiences prompted me to pursue a career in education through the leadership organization Teach for America where I began teaching and my master’s program. I graduated from Arizona State University in 2015 with a M.Ed. and teaching certification in the areas of K-12 Cross-Categorical Special Education just two years later.

Since 2015, I have been teaching individualized math instruction for students with learning differences. I have worked with students of all different backgrounds and learning styles and enjoy creating individual plans to best meet their needs.

I believe students are most successful when they have opportunities to explore concepts with concrete manipulatives to develop a conceptual understanding before they have to solve numbers on paper. This inquiry helps students deeply understand concepts and have creative opportunities to solve problems.

When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy traveling, hiking, coaching and playing ultimate Frisbee, watching sports and eating deep dish Chicago style pizza.

I am happy to offer services in remedial academic support, ADD/ADHD coaching, executive functioning support, pre-algebra, geometry and all elementary and middle school academics.

TESTIMONIAL:

”We have really enjoyed working with Kellie.  She is punctual, organized, focused and is able to motivate the children from a math perspective.  Thank you for connecting us with such a wonderful person.”

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where I attended Washington University and completed my bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Spanish with a focus on Latin American Studies. I completed my master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Tennessee. My career experience has focused on supporting adolescents and young adults in multiple settings, including home and school- based behavioral therapy, children’s hospital social work, and currently special education in the Valley supporting high school students as they develop essential independent living and post-secondary readiness skills.

For the past two and a half years I have worked as a high school transition specialist with freshman through senior level students as they develop their executive function, independent living, and post-secondary readiness skills. I teach a daily class that focuses on the understanding, development, and practice of these skills and also support students and their families as they plan for post-secondary experiences that are most appropriate.

The main way I connect with students is to help them explore and establish goals that are relevant to them and what they view to be successful high school experience. After students set their goals, I support them in developing and utilizing tools that they can successfully use across academic and personal platforms. My focus is to help students take ownership as they learn and understand what motivates them to be successful.

I spend most of my free time with my husband and daughter as we explore all of the wonderful things the Valley has to offer. We love to take day trips to escape the heat of the summer and enjoy traveling when we are able to. I also love to bake and craft, as these two activities help me slow down and practice mindfulness as well as those important executive function skills!

My main areas of support are for secondary students as they learn, develop, and practice executive function skills that will help them to be successful both in and outside of the classroom.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I was born in raised in Sioux City, IA and attended Catholic grade school and high school before venturing off to Loras College for undergraduate studies. I participated in basketball, cross country, and soccer during my 4 years in high school. As a member of National Honor Society and graduating on the Dean's List, I was able to take full advantage of my educational opportunities.

After graduating from Loras College in 2002, I remained in Dubuque, IA.  I began my teaching career as a high school social studies teacher.  I was then given the opportunity to teach World History, U.S. History, AP U.S. History, American Studies (Blended English and History Class) among other subjects.  Originally, teaching was an avenue into coaching , but before long, teaching overtook coaching as my main focus. I have been working at a private school in the Phoenix area since 2013. I teach social studies, serve as the male dean, and coach girls' soccer. There I have taught U.S History, Government and Economics.

I feel one of my greatest strengths is that I constantly evaluate my teaching and coaching style and its successes and failures. Having taught for 15 years, I do not claim to know everything and have a strong desire to better myself as a teacher. I search for differentiated lesson plans and assessments online and collaborate with other teachers in order to find varied ways to reach different learning styles. My knowledge of teaching and learning styles has greatly increased throughout my years of teaching. Some of the biggest lessons I have learned have come from my students.

I believe a teacher and coach's role in a student’s life should not be like a boss-employee relationship but rather a guide-tourist relationship. My role as an educator is to help a student find the desire for an education. My actions, words, and lesson plans reflect this thinking by allowing students to grow within their comfort zone, while still challenging them to strive for greater success both in and out of the classroom. I believe technology is a crucial element in the modern classroom but should be in balance with proven teaching styles, so students are prepared for both the modern world and general interactions within society.

Since moving to Arizona in 2012, my wife and I have added two beautiful children to our family. We enjoy visiting the zoo and aquarium, taking short trips up North to camp, and getting our kids involved in various activities.  My mom is a snow bird, so we take full advantage of grandma’s time here as well!

I offer a variety of services for Peak Academics, including support in the humanities, as well as test-taking strategies and organizational help.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE:

I was born and raised in Arizona and have lived here most of my life, both in Flagstaff and Phoenix. I have always had a love of literature, and at 16, I decided I would like to teach. Though my focus was always on college level teaching, I was privileged to get an internship at a classical charter school during my senior year of college where I tutored middle school students in essay writing. I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature in 2007.

After a few years on the East Coast, and substitute teaching both in Virginia and Arizona (grades 1-12), I became a private school teacher for grades 5 and 6 in Scottsdale. After that, I transitioned to grade school teaching at classical charter schools and taught grades 3 and 4 for six years. I was also a Teaching Assistant Coordinator, and taught new teachers how to write lesson plans, assess students, and make their objectives grade-level appropriate.

As a teacher, I have held many tutoring sessions after school, and my objectives are always to connect with students after a long day of learning and to help them retrieve their memory of concepts covered throughout the day. I love being able to work with small groups or in a one-on-one setting, as I can more easily discover a student’s learning style in this setting than in a busy classroom.

When I am not teaching, I am learning.  I love to travel to Europe, take summer courses, and read books by Victorian authors. I hike when the weather permits, and sew, photograph, or watch documentaries in my free time.

I currently offer tutoring services for kindergarten through fourth grade students in all subject areas. I also provide support in English and literature through 12th grade.
