Originally from the Midwest, I grew up in the North Valley in Phoenix and attended Northern Arizona University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Secondary English Education.  I earned my Masters of Educational Leadership from California State University, Fullerton. I am a trained Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate instructor. I am currently working on becoming a National Board Certified English teacher, the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education.

Most of my experience comes from teaching high school English, from ELL to AP/IB levels, 9th-12th grades.  I have taught in three states, for high school and college level writing courses. Currently I teach 10th and 11th grade English.

I enjoy working one-on-one with students and teaching writing skills and overall organization that help students succeed in all areas of school life. My approach is to break writing assignments down into smaller parts to teach students how to attack writing more systematically. Close reading tactics are also a method I use to help students gain confidence. Students learn how to read critically by giving them strategies such as: rereading; substituting an appropriate familiar word for an unfamiliar one; using root words to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words; using background knowledge to determine meaning; and using information from the context to determine the meaning.

When not teaching, my husband Dan and I can be found watching our children in their many activities. Our 14-year-old daughter is a member of an award winning show choir and performs in local community theater, sometimes with our 9-year-old son, who also enjoys the theater arts.  Our son also studies martial arts and has a YouTube channel.  Our 11-year-old daughter is a competitive dancer and specializes in the areas of jazz, ballet and hip hop.  Our family takes vacations to see natural and historical sites, such as the Grand Canyon and Washington, D.C.

For Peak Academics I offer tutoring services to students in grades 7 through 12 and provide support in executive skills and language arts.
