Tutor Profile:

I grew up in a small town in Illinois.  I spent a lot of time with friends and family, often camping and going for road trips.  My family and I often visited historically significant sites across the U.S., as well as National Parks.  Such trips sparked my interest in life-long learning, especially in the areas of history and geography.  Since my childhood, I have traveled to most states in the continental U.S. and several countries in Europe.   I will soon embark on my first trip to Asia!  I am always curious and always learning.

I attended Clarke College (now Clarke University) for my undergraduate education and received a B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education in the winter of 2009.  In 2016, I obtained my Master of Education degree, with an emphasis in Teaching English as a Second Language.  In my career as an educator, I have served students in preschool and grades K-8, specifically in the realm of special education.  Currently, I am a Language Arts teacher and am also pursuing my Wilson Reading System Level 1 certification.

In my former position, I provided tutoring services at a therapy center for 4 years.  I concluded my time at the therapy center in the summer of 2018.  The academic areas in which I provided support included math, reading, writing, and social skills.  I also ran a summer academic enrichment camp for elementary-aged learners and focused on the areas of reading and math.

It is so important to build trust with a student in order to make optimal progress.  I believe it is imperative to know a student’s strengths and interests, so that one can incorporate such ideas into lessons.  Also, being understanding of students individual learning styles is necessary to better understand their needs.

In my spare time I enjoy traveling, hiking, and spending time with friends and family.  A cup of coffee or tea with a good book is my favorite way to start the morning! I am also involved in church activities.  

As a tutor for Peak Academics, I offer services in the areas of reading, writing, and math at the elementary and middle school levels.  My goal is to assist students in gaining the confidence they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.  Whether they are struggling in school or desiring supplemental support, I will work with each family to make a plan that is tailored specifically to their child’s needs.

Tutor Profile:

I earned my B.A. in Elementary Education in 1989 and M.A. in Reading in 2008. I am a Certified Reading Specialist and hold both Orton-Gillingham Tutor and Adult Basic Education Certificates. I have been married to my husband, George for 25 years. We have 2 children, Christina and Michael. I love to travel and enjoy outdoor activities.

In addition to tutoring, I serve as an educational consultant and work as a part-time ESL Instructor at the community college level. Before moving to Arizona in July 2016, I was a Response to Intervention teacher and classroom teacher for an at- risk public school district in New Jersey for 25 years. During that time, I participated in many leadership roles, wrote curricula, served as a new teacher mentor, volunteered for a multitude of school committees, and assisted at parent literacy workshops. I was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2012. 

I specialize in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and have an enthusiastic teaching-style. I use multi-sensory (hands-on) techniques with all of my students. I feel learning is contagious. So, I consistently encourage my students to never stop challenging themselves to explore new things.

I am very passionate about literacy. I enjoy teaching because I believe all individuals have a desire to learn and want to be proud of their accomplishments. My future goals are to participate in research aimed at improving educational strategies. I would also love to write a book about effective ways to help children become more confident and successful readers.

I provide services for PK-4 students in reading and mathematics and specialize in the Orton-Gillingham program.
