What is your teaching philosophy? In an article entitled “Never Say Anything a Kid Can Say,” Steven C. Reinhart wrote, “My definition of a good teacher has since changed from ‘one who explains things so well that students understand’ to ‘one who gets students to explain things so well that they can be understood.’” When I read that, it completely resonated with me. It has since become my teaching philosophy.
When you're not working with kids, what do you like to do? When I’m not working with kids, I love spending time outdoors! By day, I love hiking and training my puppy. By night, I like playing around with astrophotography!
Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher was Señor Warren, a high school Spanish maestro. His classroom was decorated in the most inviting way: it was painted yellow (by him!), and it was adorned with awning and papel picado. Every class started with an upbeat pop song in Spanish…He just made learning so much fun! Beyond that, he was fantastically witty & knew exactly how to run a class full of teenagers!
What do you enjoy about tutoring? I love the mentor role that I get to play as a tutor. Kids understand and appreciate that I’m there just for them, & it’s fun to build off that camaraderie.
