Name: Kellie S
Educational Areas of Focus: Math and Reading
Educational Background: I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa. After working as a Youth Leader for several years, I went back to school and received my Master's in Education from Arizona State University. I taught 4th grade for seven years. I left the classroom when my son was born, but still enjoy working with students through tutoring at Peak Academics.
What is your teaching philosophy? It's changed a lot, especially since I have children of my own now. I think it's important to help children find their strengths and focus on them. It's important to encourage them to grow in these areas.
When you're not working with kids, what do you like to do? I love spending time with my family. When the weather is nice, I love bike rides and trips to the park. I love watching my son exploring and learning new things.
Who was your favorite teacher and why? I really loved all of my teachers. I always enjoyed going to school. My second grade teacher, Mrs. Allen, always stands out to me though. My favorite part of a school day would always be when she would read aloud to us. The stories always seemed to come alive. When I became a teacher, it didn't matter how busy our day was with lessons and standards, I always read aloud to my students. I hoped the stories would come alive for them too!
What do you enjoy about tutoring? I love that it allows me the flexibility to stay home with my children, but also help a student in need. I love teaching and with tutoring I get to do just that, teach! I really enjoy getting to know the students and helping them achieve their goals. It is so wonderful to see how proud they are when they reach a goal!
