What is your teaching philosophy? Everyone is capable of learning if they find the motivation to do so. In math, a lot of students have a hard time finding that motivation, because they don't see how it will apply to their future. I strive to find ways to relate the material to their lives, or to something that they find interesting, even if they may not exactly use what they are learning directly in the field they are going into.
When you're not working with kids, what do you like to do? I love being active. I've been an athlete my entire life, and currently play ultimate frisbee competitively. I also enjoy activities like hiking and reading because I like challenging myself both physically and mentally.
Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher was my high school AP Calculus teacher. He was easy to relate to, and found ways to inspire us in and out of school. He took the time to get to know each and every student in the class, and made the class matter to most of us.
What do you enjoy about tutoring? I enjoy giving students the one on one attention they really need that they may not get in class. In that setting students don't feel the pressure that they may feel during an actual class, and feel more comfortable asking questions. It is an extremely satisfying feeling when struggling students finally get it!
